| RP characters can fall into one of four categories, and one of three series branches.
SERIES BRANCHES
-MMX (characters existing between the years 21XX and 22XX)
-MMZ (characters existing in 23XX)
-MMZX/ZXA (characters existing after the year 25XX)
A special exception can be made for characters existing only during the Elf Wars, between 22XX and 23XX.
CATEGORIES
-Canon (strictly follows canon but with a few small headcanons to fill in gaps in their backstory)
-Mostly Canon (follows canon for the most part, but is also somewhat OOC in their actions; ex. Zero and X in love)
-AU (a completely different take on the character, like a genderbend or a what-if in the event something different could happen in their lives and change who they are completely, such as Zero remaining a Maverick)
-Fancharacter (a fanmade character with their own story and profile)
A few notes for Fancharacters:
-Please don't shatter existing timelines. This includes having a fancharacter kill an existing character before they are due to be killed. This means no AU for a fancharacter.
-No Mary-Sues or Gary-Stus here. They are characters that would heavily unbalance the cast and are just overall badly planned. Some rules for Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus are shown below.
-You can have a FC/canon pairing if you like, but ONLY if the character has no canonical love interest, ONLY if the character isn't already taken, and ONLY if you build it up gradually. Nothing spontaneous. FC/FC is perfectly acceptable in any case if the characters were already in love to start with.

HOW TO AVOID A MARY-SUE/GARY-STU
-The character should have some sort of limits and no godmoding powers without logical explanation.
-The character should not be the type to just save everyone he/she sees, making them seem weak, unless there is a good reason (ex. the one being rescued is too weak to fight).
-The character should most certainly NOT be a 'KAWAII NESU NE' recolor. Those are frowned upon greatly. Unless there is an acceptable reason, no recoloring. Got it?
-The character should have a logical backstory. Nothing absolutely ridiculous, like "HE WAS MADE FROM OMEGAS PARTS THATS WHY HES SO STRONG AND CAN BEAT ZERO" or "SHES CIEL AS A REPLOID". Seriously, put some kind of thought into your characters.
Here's an example of a character that can be acceptable (note that I used one of my own characters):
Eon-Flux
Classification: MMZ/MMX, Fancharacter
Species: Reploid
Eyes: Blue
Hair: White
Weapon: Fragment Cannon (fires explosive shards that detonate by remote command)
Abilities: Basic time manipulation (can stop time for a short duration, or slow it; she can only manipulate time to a small extent before she becomes completely exhausted)
Bio: Eon-Flux (Eon for short) is a prototype time manipulating Reploid created to stop the Elf Wars before they could begin. Her creator designed her to be able to jump through time, but only once, at which point she would burn out her time core, which was still under development. She was created sometime post-MMZ4 with the simple mission of going back through time and stopping whatever could have caused the war. However, she missed her mark greatly due to only having one shot with her time jump, and wound up in the interim between X8 and Command Mission's timelines. Over time, Eon grew to have feelings for Axl, who saved her on multiple occasions, and even risked her life to protect his.
A carefully thought-out story with a purpose, a weapon that would actually WORK, and she has limits. Big ones. And she also isn't just "OH I'LL SAVE YOU" but at the same time she isn't "OH NO I CAN'T DO ANYTHING SOMEONE SAVE ME".
Now here's a character that would just be.....oy...
Marigold
Classification: MMZ, Fancharacter
Species: Reploid/Human Hybrid
Eyes: Pink
Hair: Gold
Weapon: Z-Saber
Abilities: Has all the same fighting abilities as Zero and has unlimited energy
Bio: Marigold is Zero and Ciel's daughter and is one of the makers of the Guardians. She is unbeatable in battle and is also immortal because she's part Reploid. She looks like a girl Zero.
What do you see? A Hybrid character, which is highly HIGHLY unlikely, not to mention a direct blood relation to two canon characters, and a total god-mode to boot, and her story is very lacking and unlikely.
I wish I could avoid violence...but if I did, this world wouldn't be able to live in peace. So I will fight for this world, to protect humans and Reploids alike.
