He didn't know exactly how he'd found it, but that didn't change the fact that he DID find it.

X pushed aside a bit of overgrowth, revealing a small tunnel carved into a rock wall. The tunnel sloped downward at a fairly shallow angle, and was overall quite large, large enough for the elf to walk through. He slowly walked through the tunnel, following it down to the cavern it opened up to.

The cavern was actually a massive, underground lake. The lake was crystal-clear and rather deep, though X could see all the way down to the bottom. The walls of the cavern were lined with glistening rubies and sapphires, and the ceiling of the cavern was domed almost perfectly, with a giant, twenty-foot-across hole at the top, allowing sunlight to filter down into it. The shores surrounding the lake were grassy, and some flowers peeked up from the grass here and there. Several large rocks were scattered here and there; they seemed to make good seats.

The cavern carried a beauty that this world was now a stranger to.

X sighed. He wished greatly to have found this place sooner. He wished he could show his closest friend what he'd found. But he doubted he would ever see him again, not after the fall of Ragnarok. He was gone.

This place became a place of mourning for X.

Zero was lost. He had no idea where he was, nor what had happened to him subsequent to being transferred to Ragnarok. Although the surroundings seemed familiar they all did. Everywhere he walked everything was just familiar. He was ready to rest, needed to rest. Warning signals were going off.

Condition Critical. Shut Down Recommended.

He just wanted his systems to stop blaring at him. He knew he was practically a scrap heap walking. He didn't need something else to tell him that too. He was staring at the sky while walking, trying to drown out the sound of the warning sirens and nearly plummeted into the large hole in front of him. He managed to catch himself before he fell too far though.

A rather large chunk of the dome ceiling fell down into the lake below. He peered over the side noting the large underground lake. That was really all he could see from his position. It was a strange sight to be sure, but he didn't feel like trying to figure out how to get down there. He walked around the hole, being careful not to slip again. He needed to find a place to rest. The strong wind suggested a storm.

A howling wind caught X's attention as it whistled past the hole in the ceiling of the cavern. The haunting sound echoed, creating an eerie melody within the cavern. X shivered at the sound.

The shadow of a reflection caught the brunette's attention. Something was standing near the hole. X looked up, leaning forward as he tried to examine the spot for any details. He spotted a red boot with a gold cuff around the ankle, but that was it.

Red...

X rubbed his eyes and looked again, but the figure was gone. He sighed and sat near the edge of the lake. The brunette was seeing things; there was no possible way that was him.

The wind was starting to throw Zero off balance. The damaged he sustained from... whatever it was, wasn't helping either. He knew he probably should've moved away from the large gap in the earth, but it would be quicker to stay somewhat near it. He stepped wrong once again, this time his entire leg losing ground and he ended up awkwardly perched on the edge. As long as the ground didn't give way while he was trying to get up he'd be fine.

Systems to left leg offline.

Or not. He grumbled under his breath and attempted to drag himself away from the edge using his remaining good leg and arms. It worked well for the most part, other than him kicking out more rocks and dirt into the cavern below. He heaved a sigh of frustration after he was safely away from the edge. How was he going to get anywhere now? He couldn't walk. Giving in to the situation he was in, he flopped backwards onto the grass and stared up at the sky in annoyance. It was starting to get dark.

A loud ker-plunk snapped X out of his thoughts as a rock fell into the center of the lake. He watched in confusion as more rocks fell from the hole in the ceiling, splashing lightly into the water and sending ripples across the surface. Looking up at the ceiling, X spotted that boot again, but this time connected to a black-clad leg.

Now X was wondering if he was really imagining things or not. The brunette stood, watching in confusion as the leg was pulled out of view. He wished his flying abilities were up to par again, and he deeply wished he could swim--or even breathe underwater for that matter--so he could examine the hole in the ceiling better, at a neater vantage point.

Was he imagining things? Or was someone really there. The elf cupped his hands around his mouth. "Hello up there!" he called, his voice echoing through the cavern.

Zero almost didn't hear the voice over his warning sirens. He wished he knew how to shut them off. He sat up and looked around before realizing it had come from inside the cavern. "..X.?" he questioned. He was unsure. He was certain he'd heard things before, but nothing had ever been there. He had spoken loud enough to barely be heard over the wind. He hated questioning voices that he wasn't even sure were there or not. Sometimes he was certain he was crazy, and not because of the currently dormant Maverick Virus either.

It was faint, but X could pick up a faint voice beyond the wind. That familiar voice from years gone past, somewhat rough from so much disuse over the last century, was unmistakable. Even though it wasn't as smooth or youthful-sounding as it was all those years ago, X knew it anywhere.

"Zero!" called X enthusiastically. "Zero, i-is that you?!"

He needed to know for sure. He needed to know that this was his friend, and if it was, he needed his friend to know that X was alive.

"What's left of me." Zero gave an exasperated laugh. There wasn't much humor in it, it was just something he did every now and again when he was damaged to an extreme. The thought struck him however, wasn't X gone? Hadn't the cyber elf been forced from this world a while ago?

Zero shook his head. Even if he was just an insane reploid, he felt happy talking to his friend again. He still wasn't sure if the voice he was hearing was real or not. X wasn't right there in front of him, and he'd stay unsure until he actually saw the cyber elf.

...Maybe he was dreaming again.

The thought weighed on him like a freight train. What if he was dreaming? It wouldn't have been the first time. He fell back once again and draped one of his arms over his eyes. He hated dreaming.

That dry sense of humor was all it took for X to realize that this was his friend. He laughed. "It IS you!" he exclaimed enthusiastically. "You're alive!"

A familiar reflex suddenly kicked in that pretty much forced X to run forward, a motion he often did when he was particularly energetic or enthusiastic about something, or if he was running to greet a friend. It couldn't have been a worse time for that reflex to kick in, however.

The moment his foot broke the surface of the water, he knew he was in trouble. The lake was bowl shaped and had practically no shallows. X let out a yelp of surprise as his other foot slipped and he was plunged into the water. His robes immediately bogged him down, causing the elf to sink like a stone.

Zero heard something sink into the lake. That was enough to force him to move. He managed to force himself to his feet, rerouting the remaining spare energy he had left to his offline leg.

Action not advisable. Proceed?

"Yes, now shut up." Zero practically growled to his safety protocol. He jumped into the cavern, landing directly in the middle of the lake. The cool water felt good on his over clocked systems, but he didn't pay it much notice. He dashed over to X, grabbed the cyber elf, and managed to climb back up to the surface. After he had set the over enthusiastic elf down his leg gave out again.

He landed hard, halfway on his side and grunted. "Well that was lucky." he muttered knowing that if the spare energy had run out any sooner they'd both be stuck in the middle of the lake. He honestly wasn't sure how he was still awake. He had no energy stores left. That should've put him in immediate shut down mode, right?

X was already running out of air by the time Zero had jumped into the lake, the shock from tripping and falling into the water preventing him from getting a good breath of air before he fell. It was probably quite obvious by how tense he was when Zero grabbed him, but thankfully Zero was fast enough to get him out of the water before he tried to breathe in. The blonde hadn't even set him down before he collapsed with his arm still around the elf's waist. X landed next to Zero, taking a moment to catch his breath before focusing on Zero.

"Zero...you're really here, right...?" he asked nervously. "I-I'm not dreaming, am I...?"

Zero glanced over at the elf next to him. "If it was a dream hopefully I'd be in better shape than this." He commented. He really hoped X didn't dream about him being this torn up. He pulled his arm away and repositioned himself into a more comfortable sitting position. It was weird having his leg offline, but nothing he couldn't deal with. His armor felt a lot heavier than it usually did. Maybe that was because of how exhausted he really was. Rain started to pour through the opening in the ceiling causing Zero to focus on the sky, or what he could see of it from his position anyway.

X chuckled. That sense of humor told him that this was definitely Zero. He sat up upon hearing the rain falling, creating a resonating melody as the raindrops hit the water, and looked over at Zero, taking note of the blonde's condition. He was in terrible shape.

And yet...it wasn't nearly as bad as it should have been.

The drenched Cyber-elf walked over to one of the many rocks in the cavern, where he kept a stash of Energy Crystals. He grabbed a few large ones and brought them over to Zero, offering them to him. "You should eat something," he said calmly. "It'll help you regain your strength."

"Thanks." Zero said somewhat quietly while taking the energy crystals X offered him. He ate a few, but messed with the remaining ones, giving away that he was deep in thought. He really didn't know what had happened after being transferred to Ragnarok. He didn't even remember arriving on the space station. Yet something had happened to him. That much was obvious by his condition. He only wish he knew what.

Zero managed to pull himself out of his own thoughts and eat the remaining crystals in his hand. It did help a little. He didn't feel quite as exhausted, but the feeling was still there. It would only go away if he was in a recharge pod for a while.

X sat next to Zero, sitting a bit closer than he normally would, when Zero snapped out of his thoughts. "...I'm so relieved you're alive, Zero..." the brunette murmured, watching the water rippling as the rain pelted it. "After the Ragnarok fell, I was so afraid you were dead...but you never arrived in Cyberspace, so I had hope that maybe you were out there somewhere..."

He pulled his knees up to his chest and wrapped his arms around his legs, resting his chin against his knees.

Zero was silent for a moment staring a the surface of the lake before finally speaking. "...So Ragnarok did fall?" he asked a little confused. Is that why there was debris in some places? He gripped his helmet, suddenly getting a headache. He had so many questions to ask, but he decided it best to keep them to himself. There was no need to burden down X with a barrage of questions. He was just glad to have found his friend again.

X nodded, almost sadly. "I watched the whole thing from Cyberspace," he explained. "You went up to Ragnarok to defeat Weil. He merged with the core, and you defeated him... When the core exploded though...you were still on Ragnarok... Everyone thought you...you were dead..."

His voice trailed off, almost breaking when he remembered it...seeing the Ragnarok break apart in the atmosphere and fall to earth in a spectacular, beautiful meteor shower...knowing that Zero was still up there...

Zero wrapped one of his arms around X's shoulders as if to reassure the cyber elf. He didn't remember any of that. Maybe it was because his memory got damaged from the fall. It was obvious that he didn't escape before the station exploded. "At least we're both okay." he said looking over at X. He was just glad they were together again, even if he couldn't remember what had happened to him.

Before X could stop himself, he had leaned against Zero, crying softly. He was still dripping wet from falling into the lake, so it wasn't initially obvious at first, but it slowly became apparent by his shuddering breaths. His tears were from a mix of sadness at the memory and joy that Zero was alive. He didn't bother trying to wipe his eyes, as he knew that trying to dry his tears would only cause more.

Zero rubbed X's back in an attempt to console the sobbing cyber elf. He hated it whenever X was sad, but he really couldn't blame the elf for crying. Having no idea if your friend was dead or alive. It seemed they had thought the same for a while.

After a moment, Zero wiped away X's tears in an attempt to get his friend to stop crying. He hadn't even thought about what he was doing. It was just an automatic reaction. What made it strange was the fact that he'd never done that before. As far as he could remember anyway.

X looked up at Zero when the blonde wiped his tears away, his eyes slightly puffy from crying. When was the last time he'd done that... It took several moments for X to remember; it was sometime after Sigma first went Maverick, when the blue Reploid was feeling absolutely terrible because he blamed himself for it, since he was unable to pull the trigger and destroy Sigma then and there.

The Cyber-elf was still sniffling a little, but his crying had tapered off for the most part. He scooted a little closer to Zero, resting his head on his shoulder again. It didn't dawn on him that he'd never once sat this close to him.

After X had calmed down Zero realized just how close they were sitting. He felt slightly embarrassed but managed to keep the feeling from showing too much and left his arm draped around the cyber elf's shoulder. He wanted to speak, but wasn't sure he'd be able to. At least not without giving away how he was feeling. He'd rather stay quiet than do that.

((Ummm...I think the bottom part of your avatar is corrupted. It's a big old grey streak.))

X watched the lake in silence, listening to a mix of the echoing rain and the faint hum of Zero's core at work. That was one more thing that told him that Zero was still alive and this was real.

After a few minutes, the brunette noticed that Zero was rather quiet. He looked up at the blonde with visible confusion in his eyes. "What's wrong...?" he asked.

(( Yeah I noticed. I've just been too lazy to fix it ))

Zero glanced over at X confused a little himself. "Nothing, why?" he asked. It only hit him a moment after he asked as to what X was referring to. He had been far too quiet. Which caused X to worry, but it was only because he was embarrassed that he was so quiet. Now X would probably think he was lying. He was a mess inside and out.

"You're being really quiet," replied X. "Even for how you are now, this silence is pretty unusual."

It was true, too. Ever since Zero woke up from his century-long stasis, he had been much quieter than when he was still a Maverick Hunter. The most he'd really said was usually when he was talking to X about current events, or talking to Ciel about missions and Neo Arcadian events, but he also did say a good deal to Weil before his final battle.

Something was definitely wrong with Zero, but X thought it would be best not to pry.

"It's just... strange. We've never been so close before." Zero stated referring to how close they were sitting to each other. It was obvious enough that Zero was at the very least, a little embarrassed. Social interaction definitely wasn't his thing. Not even close to be exact. But he could deal with it a little better since it was X. He really didn't understand why that was though.

"O-oh, I-I'm sorry."

X realized quickly that Zero was a bit embarrassed that he was sitting so close to the blonde and scooted away a bit. He hoped it would ease his discomfort a little; even before he sealed himself away, Zero was never the most social Reploid. If anything he was one of the most anti-social. The only ones he really spent any time with were X and Axl, X moreso than Axl.

X directed his attention back to the lake, realizing that things just got very awkward.

Zero fell back onto the grass and closed his eyes. It might've been better if he hadn't have said anything, since now it was rather awkward between the two of them. "It's okay." he said not wanting X to feel like he'd done something wrong or anything like that. For some reason he always wanted X to be happy. He wanted his other friends to be happy too, but none more than the cyber elf. He really didn't understand it. Maybe it was because he didn't have proper social programming.

X closed his eyes as he listened to the echo of the rain in the cavern. A rumble of thunder now accented the rainfall, and the sounds were rather calming when combined, now roughly equaling a lullaby made through nature.

He didn't know why he suddenly felt awkward around Zero. He was never like this around anyone else, least of all Zero. In fact he was most comfortable around Zero, since Zero was the first friend he'd made when he was a Maverick Hunter and he'd been around him almost his entire life until he sealed himself away.

X sighed. He shouldn't have asked, but at at the same time he felt bad for making Zero feel uncomfortable.

Zero would've sighed, but he didn't feel like breaking the silence. Instead he pulled up a holo screen and went though all of his systems to see just how badly damaged he was.

Left leg offline. Core Power cell function at 33%. Reserve energy 5%. CPU damaged. Defrag recommended.

Zero frowned slightly. How nice. Well at least he knew why his memories were missing in spots. He'd need a recovery pod to fix everything. He shook his head. There wasn't a point in starting if he couldn't repair everything. The update was visible where X was sitting, the one downside to a holo screen. Everyone can see what you're doing.

X had looked back over at Zero when the faint green glow of a holo screen shone in the corner of his eye. Upon seeing all the damage Zero had sustained, X decided to lend a hand. Without saying a word, he slung one of Zero's arms around his shoulders and wrapped his free arm around the blonde's waist, then pulled him up to his feet so the Reploid was leaning against the shorter male.

"You need medical attention," he stated calmly but keeping his words to a minimum. "I'll take you back to the base."

Zero ended up leaning against X more than he would've liked, mainly because of their height difference. He noticed X was talking in short, clipped sentences. He wasn't saying anything more than what he needed to. That unnerved Zero slightly. For some reason it made him feel like he'd done something wrong. He remained quiet and waited for X to start walking back to the base before he followed. There wasn't a need for him to talk anyway.

X began the slow hike back to the Resistance Base, trying his best to ignore the rain. It had lightened notably, and the two of them were still soaked from their quick "swim", but he wanted to get out of the rain as soon as he could and get Zero into a recovery pod as soon as possible, for two reasons.

One was that he wanted to make sure Zero's condition didn't worsen.

The other was that he didn't want to make Zero uncomfortable.

He didn't know why he seemed so antsy around Zero all of a sudden. Maybe it was just embarrassment that he was sitting so close to Zero? Either way, X's personality was notably different.

Zero was even more uncomfortable now than before because X wasn't being himself. He was completely different. It took them a while to get to the base, but they finally made it. He was a little relieved. He just wanted to rest, and get away from X for a little while. Especially if X was gonna be like this for the rest of the time. He wasn't even bothering to look at the cyber elf anymore. In fact he was looking everywhere but at X.

X led Zero to the infirmary and carefully helped him into a recovery pod. He typed a few commands into a console to turn the pod on. The pod hummed to life after a moment and the upper half lowered to partially cover Zero.

"I'll come back to see how you're doing in a few hours," the elf said, avoiding looking at Zero directly and choosing to look at him through the corner of his eye. "That should at least be enough for a recharge."

With that the elf left rather suddenly. All he could think was that he hoped he didn't upset Zero.

Zero sighed and pushed himself out of the pod sitting on one of the work benches. He hooked himself up to the pod that way his core could charge while he worked to repair himself. He quickly managed to get his left leg online again, just bad wiring and not enough energy. His core and energy reserves just needed to charge up again and he defragmented his memory while he worked to repair his armor. He would have to take a closer look at his CPU later. It took a few hours but he finally repaired all of his armor. However now he was left in nothing but the thin black body suit. He had even untied his hair and let it drape over the edges of the table he was sitting on.

It sounded like X was coming back to check on him. He'd completely forgotten about how he'd felt earlier.

X returned to the infirmary after three hours, which he guessed would be enough time for Zero to fully recharge and get his self-repair systems working again. He was surprised to see the blonde already sitting up, out of the pod, working on his armor. He didn't pay any mind to the fact that the Reploid was now technically nude with the exception of the black bodysuit he wore under his armor and vest.

"Are you feeling better now?" he asked. He still seemed a bit on-edge around his friend.

Zero looked up at X when the cyber elf came back into the room. "I.." was. "I'm doing better." he stated before going back to finishing a repair on his wrist armor. "I'll need a secure computer though." he said thinking about how he'll have to see what was wrong with his CPU. He didn't trust the base enough to just do it with the holo computer he had.

He stood up and made sure that his leg was working properly before starting to put all his armor back on again. He easily and quickly tied up his hair. The defrag of his memories was done, but they were still out of order. Oh well. At least he had them now. Although he had a feeling he'd never know what happened on Ragnarok for himself, he didn't really care. It wasn't all that important to him.

"I see," said X when the Reploid mentioned he'd need a more secure computer. The only computer he knew was reliable enough was Neo Arcadian, but in the aftermath of the Ragnarok being fired, Neo Arcadia was pretty much gone. There were really no computers that the blonde could access.

"Would you like to rest?" X offered. "Since the base is empty there are several rooms you can use."

"I'd rather not. If I can't trouble shoot my CPU I still need to check and reset my other systems." Zero stated while pulling up the holo screen again. It looked like he'd have to use it regardless. He refused to actually rest. He hated doing nothing. He ran a quick scan to make sure he didn't need anything else done.

Defragmentation Successful. Core Power Levels 89%. Reserve Energy Levels 51%. CPU Damaged. Safety Protocols Reset. Stress Levels High. Recommend Sleep Mode.

Zero wanted to hit himself. Of course X would probably see that and worry or something. He just wanted whatever this was between them to stop. He hated it.

X noticed the holo screen's display again. It seemed Zero was recovering quickly, but the last two lines made X want to punch himself in the face. Namely the line about Zero's stress levels. He felt even worse now; he'd made Zero uncomfortable, and while trying to make sure he wouldn't be uncomfortable anymore, he was causing him a good deal of stress.

X form flickered once, a very quick static burst. It was barely noticeable unless one was actually paying attention to the brunette. "You need to rest for a little while," he stated when his form stabilized. "I'll try to find a computer for you to use."

"I'm fine." Zero said while leaning against the bench and using the holo screen to go through his CPU. Although most of the files were unreadable to X, there were a few that probably caught the brunette's attention however. There was an entire file just named 'X'. Another named 'Trash' which was strange since CPU's didn't have trash files. The last file that came up was merely labeled 'Unknown'.

Zero went through and sorted through all the files to clean everything up. After he was done his CPU seemed to be repaired. At least for the moment. He wasn't sure if X had seen any of the files or not.

X was too busy berating himself for causing Zero so much stress to really notice any of the files displayed on the screen from Zero's CPU, though he did notice a file named after him. X guessed that it was just memories of him, then promptly resumed mentally scolding himself.

Why was he acting that way toward Zero? Had fighting alone for a century numbed him so much that he acted cold even to his best friend? He didn't understand it at all, and it only made him feel worse.

His form flickered again.

Zero glanced up at X noticing his form flicker for the first time. He knew the look on X's face. The cyber elf was yelling at himself. "Hey." Zero said dropping his arms at his sides. "Stop looking like that." he half ordered. When he moved his arms it caused the file named after the brunette to open. Strangely there wasn't a single memory file to be found within it. It seemed to be.. emotion files.

Zero was too preoccupied with getting X to snap out of it to even notice that one of his files was out on display. If he had of noticed he probably would've shut it rather quickly.

X didn't even hear Zero over his mental reprimanding. He was wondering if there might be something rather wrong with his programming, something in his files being completely messed up. Even though he seemed organic, it was just the form he chose to take--he was still a data being.

Were his emotion files corrupted? His rational thinking? Something was definitely off with the brunette. His face seemed devoid of emotion now, his eyes vacant. He was lost in his own thoughts, and didn't even notice Zero anymore.

Ironic, because the one he was thinking about WAS Zero.

Zero heaved a sigh and grabbed X's hand before gently pulling the cyber elf back to his room. X needed the rest more than he did. The brunette was really starting to worry him. He had a feeling if he were human his blood pressure would be through the roof at this point. "X, you kill me sometimes." he mumbled while walking down the hallway.

The brunette nearly fell on his face when Zero started dragging him to his room. Something in the back of his mind made him wonder HOW Zero knew where his room was. X didn't even notice that his feet weren't touching the ground at all--he was floating a half-inch off the ground, his body flickering like a hologram. Still, the elf remained silent, like a zombie.

Zero shoved X back causing the cyber elf to sit on the bed. He stood in front of the brunette, his arms crossed over his chest. He looked slightly annoyed. "X, tell me what's wrong." He stated, his voice normal. If the cyber elf still didn't respond he figured he'd just work his way up to sounding like he was barking out orders. That always got X to respond. No matter how deep in thought the brunette might've been.

Surprisingly X managed to remain sitting upright when Zero shoved him. Usually when X got like this and Zero shoved him to get him to sit down on a bench or a bed, he'd fall straight back like a rag doll. He sat with his hands folded in his lap, looking down at them and not up at Zero.

"...I didn't want to make you uncomfortable..." he mumbled in a somewhat frail voice, just barely loud enough for Zero to hear. "......You never did well with people...and you looked embarrassed...so I thought you wanted space..."

X was visibly a mess. His face was ghastly pale, his eyes dull and his hair lacking any sheen and shine. Even his robes seemed to be colored in dull, muted hues instead of the vibrant blues that he was so known for, and his halo seemed to be wavering in and out of existence. It was if he was half dead, or became a zombie in the short trip from the infirmary to his room.

Zero shook his head. "It was just something I wasn't used to. It didn't mean I wanted you to awkwardly avoid me." he said rubbing his face. The only reason he'd acted the way he had was because of how X had been acting towards him.

He took in the change in colors in X. "You don't look very good, X. You should rest." he suggested, not really knowing how to take care of a cyber elf. Other than feeding it energy crystals, but he was somewhat certain that, that wasn't what X needed. He was more worried than he was before. He was about ready to put his face through the wall.
