X's condition was worsening gradually by the second. His face alone gave off the appearance of someone who hadn't slept in roughly a month. His robes were almost grey, his hair was matte brown with absolutely no luster to it, his skin was nearly paper white, and his eyes were a grey-green. He didn't even hear Zero this time, not because he was lost in thought.

He literally could not hear him.

Whatever was wrong with the brunette was clearly far worse than it appeared. His material form seemed to be linked to his emotions and stress levels, and with his slow downward spiral to depression for making Zero uncomfortable earlier, something he felt terrible about because it was the first time in quite a while that he'd been around Zero, coupled with the fear that the century-long solo fight that made him stop caring about everything may have damaged him severely, had dramatically increased his stress and thrown his emotions into turmoil.

In a nutshell the brunette was withering away from his worry.

Zero really had no idea what he could do to help X. He was scared that there wasn't anything that he could do. He hugged the brunette tightly. "X.. Please calm down.." he half pleaded not really sure if X could even hear him or not. He really didn't want to lose the cyber elf again. This was all his fault. He should've just kept his mouth shut. It was always because of him something happened to X.

X slumped limply against Zero as if he were nothing more than a rag doll, as if all the life had just been drained out of him. Something was very, very wrong with him. He was completely unresponsive, practically dead to the world. The only signs that he was still alive was that he was still breathing--albeit somewhat weakly--and he was still THERE. If he were to die, he would fade away. Odds are in this state, he wouldn't even return to Cyberspace. He'd probably just cease to exist.

It was as if something was possessing the Cyber-elf, forcing him into this state. Yet it wasn't. It was his own worry.

This had happened once before, when X first became a Cyber-elf. He became frantic about his new form and worried so much that he practically turned into a banshee. It took quite some time for him to calm down.

But even then he didn't get this bad.

He wanted to sleep.

Just sleep forever.

"Damnit X, you're killing me." Zero muttered pulling away slightly to look at X. He was obviously getting worse. He'd have to figure out something to do if he wanted to save the brunette. But it didn't seem like X was able to hear him at all.

"X, I.. I love you."

Zero once again wasn't able to look at the brunette, although he kept a hold of X's shoulders to make sure that the cyber elf stayed upright. If X couldn't hear him then oh well. If X did hear him, well, he wasn't sure what he'd do.

X's head lolled forward just before Zero spoke. His eyes were shut, and he was completely motionless. No wavering form, no breathing, none of that. He was..."there", in a sense, but yet he wasn't there.

He didn't hear Zero at all. Were he a Reploid, he would have been labeled as either in sleep mode or shut down. But as a Cyber-elf things were very different. There was really no way to describe this, other than a state of limbo.

Was Zero still there? Did he leave when all this started? None of that was registering in the brunette's mind. All that remained was a faint echo that something had gone horribly wrong.

Zero closed his eyes and held X tightly. He began to shake slightly. He didn't know what to do, and he was actually scared. Was he really going to lose X after just finding the brunette again? Then again he really shouldn't have been surprised if that would happen. Fate seemed to hate him quite a bit.

X remained motionless, like a frail, wispy spirit that could easily break in Zero's arms. Despite his death-trance, he did have a slight, coherent thought. It took him a while to figure out what was wrong. In his worry, he was burning off all the energy he had.

Not like he could do anything about it now. Zero probably thought he was dead.

Zero would've released the cyber elf in his arms, but by the time he had read the message it was a little late to bother.

Core Systems Overheating. Dumping Reserve Energy.

Zero started to curse, but then quickly grit his teeth. It always hurt like hell when it shouldn't have. There was probably something wrong with how his systems handled that. His systems let out too much energy causing the room to become charged. Things that weren't even plugged up were charging. He would still love to know how dumping his reserve energy would help his core cool itself though. Maybe something was wrong with his protocols.

Though he didn't move and his appearance didn't improve at all, X was affected by the energy radiating from Zero. He'd resumed breathing, albeit shallowly, when his body started to absorb some of the energy.

The brunette remained slack in Zero's arms, however, but the fact that he was breathing would likely give Zero some hope.

Zero looked down at X a little surprised. Was all he needed energy? He was tempted to dump some of his core energy since it was stronger than his reserves, but hesitated. His reserves were depleted, but all of the energy wasn't actually out of his body yet. He didn't need to super charge the room. He'd had to wait if he decided to actually do it.

When all the energy finally escaped him he was certain he could actually feel it in the air. It was strange. The room was small enough to contain all of it in a somewhat packed state. He was glad he hadn't released more energy. Next he'd be able to taste it. He shook his head at his own thought.

X's condition was no longer worsening, meaning he wasn't in as much danger of dying, but his condition wasn't improving, either. The brunette was still comatose, completely unresponsive, limp in his friend's hold.

The elf had started absorbing a good deal of the energy in the room, though it was clear that it was just a reflex. It didn't seem like he was in control of his action.

Zero sighed and laid X on the bed gently. He hated this. Mostly because he didn't have an answer. At least X wasn't getting any worse. That was one the positive he could reason himself into. But the cyber elf wasn't any better either.

Zero slumped onto the bed next to X on his stomach. He realized just how exhausted he really was just then. He wanted to rest, but at the same time he didn't. Something might happen to X if he did. He somehow managed to reason himself into sleeping. He set his core to disperse energy when the room reached a certain level and then to awaken him when he had 30% of his energy left. It wasn't the best idea, but it was better than not resting. He quickly went into sleep mode, but ended up wrapping an arm around X's waist before he did so.

X remained still after Zero laid him on his bed, not even reacting when Zero wrapped his arm around the brunette's waist. Zero would probably have noticed how painfully thin X had become when his energy depleted; his overall appearance was akin to someone who had been locked away in a dungeon for several months. It was a wonder that he was even still breathing.

As Zero slept, X slowly began to regain energy at a rate of about 1% per ten minutes. His appearance improved slightly as time passed, as he was no longer skin-and-bone, but he was still very pale and his overall color was very muted.

Zero had slept for five hours while still keeping the room charged with energy. The only reason he'd slept so long was because his systems didn't wake him back up. He was at 19% energy level in his core. The lack of energy made him groggy, but he looked over at X. The brunette seemed to be doing better, even though he didn't know how he was. It didn't matter. X was doing better, that was all he cared about. Although he'd need to recharge again. It wouldn't have been so bad if his systems hadn't have just dumped his reserve.

He allowed his core to let out one more shot of energy before shutting the program off. He stood up wondering if he'd be able to find any portable recharge things. If so he could use that to keep the energy in the room up instead of himself.

By the time Zero had woken up, X's energy was at about 35% and had stopped increasing. He looked a bit better now; some color was starting to come to his face, and his halo was shimmering back into view, despite its flickering.

Still, the brunette showed no signs of waking up. He seemed to be in a coma, almost like a sleeping prince.

Zero sighed. It was partially from relief and partially as a stress reflex. He was looking a lot better than before. It was a good sign, but X still wasn't waking up. He wasn't sure what he could do to get the cyber elf to wake from his coma. But he'd have to recharge before he did anything. Without even thinking about what he was doing he planted a quick kiss on X's forehead before wandering off to go recharge. His armor was feeling heavy again, which was always a sign that he needed energy, and soon.

X remained asleep even when Zero kissed him on the forehead. The only sign that X knew what happened was a small twitch of his eyelids. His appearance was a bit healthier than before when Zero left the room, but he still didn't wake up. It seemed to be a failsafe to keep his energy from depleting again until it was fully replenished, but given enough time he would probably wake up.

Zero had managed to find some portable recharge tanks and hooked one up to himself before returning to X's room. He attempted to do a scan on the sleeping cyber elf. It might tell him what was wrong, although he knew X needed energy he wanted to make sure nothing else was wrong.

Error. Target not identified.

Well it seemed he couldn't do a scan on cyber elves. He shook his head. Maybe he should just find something to do for a while. He had a feeling X would wake up eventually, since the brunette seemed healthier. Maybe he could get used to the base. It reminded him of the old Hunter base. Maybe that was why he knew where X's room was.

X winced slightly when Zero attempted to run a scan on him, as if the scan's invasive nature hurt him. His body immediately rerouted all signals so he couldn't be scanned. It was one of the more unusual safety precautions his body had developed when he became a Cyber-elf. It allowed him to easily slip into Neo Arcadia when need be, as he would be undetected, but sometimes it seemed more of a curse than a blessing, such as now, when Zero was trying to scan him to see if there was anything wrong with him.

And he couldn't even shut it off.

His energy level was at roughly 40% now. It had jumped a bit in the short time that Zero had been gone.

Zero noticed X wince and felt a bit guilty. Looked like he wouldn't be trying that again. It had been able to tell him X's energy levels though. As far as Zero could tell it seemed to be going up. That was definitely a good sign. He might've tried hooking up the spare tank to X, but his limited knowledge on cyber elves prevented him from doing so. He didn't want to mess anything up.

Instead he decided to try and put his memories in order. He sat in one of the chairs and put himself into standby mode while he worked.

X's condition seemed to be slowly improving, although his energy was now replenishing at a much slower rate. It now seemed like he had just been stuck at the bottom of a rocky canyon for a week with no food or water: very weak but still alive. He was able to absorb the little bit of energy that leaked out while Zero was in standby mode. It wasn't much, but it was helping.

A small twitch of his hand was the first visible sign that he was regaining his strength.

Zero was busy going through his memories, but he was on the ground in a ridiculous amount of pain before he even knew what happened. He clenched his teeth and saw pieces of his armor and vest on the floor. Then he realized there was a large hole in his chest.

WARNING. REMOVAL OF ENERGY CANISTER WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE SHUT DOWN. ENERGY CANISTER AT 42%

It took him a minute to piece the small puzzle together. His core had somehow over heated and blew. He assumed that's why his protocols had dumped his energy reserves earlier. The energy that was sustained in his core was now in the room, having no where else to go. His systems tried to gather some of it back, but it was a pointless effort. He pushed himself back up and looked at himself in a mirror. It looked like something had ripped into his chest. It didn't go all the way through however.

X didn't wake up, but he was mildly aware of his surroundings--namely an immense pulse of energy. He didn't attempt to absorb the energy, as he could tell something rather terrible had happened. Zero was hurt.

The Cyber-elf wanted to wake up now. His energy was at about 50% now, enough for him to sustain himself without any real trouble, but just waking up would take a large chunk of that energy, making it a mute point. He could only hope that his energy recharged itself to at least 60% so he could wake up and sustain his form with no negative side effects.

Please be okay...please be okay...PLEASE be okay...

Zero cursed. He couldn't repair the large hole in his chest on his own. He might be able to make a new core, but he wouldn't be able to install it himself. He ended up actually hitting his head against the wall. "Guess I should've checked that too." he mumbled rather annoyed. His chest felt like it was burning, something akin to pouring rubbing alcohol on a cut and it wouldn't go away. He realized that for all intents and purposes he was dead unless he was constantly hooked up to a power source.

CANISTER AT 35%

Even better. It seemed as though his systems couldn't manage the energy effectively, so some of it was going to waste. At least he had another one.

X's sleep became somewhat fitful as the Cyber-elf tried to force himself awake. He shifted around a bit, eyelids twitching as he groaned a little. It almost seemed like he was having a nightmare and he just couldn't wake himself up.

Something was very wrong. He could sense it. Something happened to Zero.

But he couldn't wake up. He couldn't help him.

His energy level was at 57%. It was increasing a bit faster now as he absorbed excess energy from...somewhere. He didn't know where.

Zero glanced over at X noticing how restless the cyber elf had become. Did he know what was happening? Well, as much as he'd be able to anyway. Some of his circuits began to spark causing him to look at his chest again. The connections to the core were trying to deliver energy to it, but since it wasn't there they just sparked and released energy into the surroundings. Well that was where the leak was, but he couldn't really fix it. Protocols wouldn't shut down connections to the core, even if it wasn't there.

Now he was stuck with the problem of figuring out how he'd change the canisters when the one currently hooked to him ran out. He could try hooking them both up at the same time then taking off the old one, but he didn't have enough cables to do such a thing. Maybe if he forced all the remaining energy into him it would give him enough time to change the canisters. But with the leak, he wasn't so sure that would work either.

X's stress had skyrocketed from his inability to wake up. His energy levels were now steady at 72%...but why couldn't he wake up? The fail-safe shouldn't still be in effect with his energy at that level. Or perhaps his stress was keeping him in this state. Either way, the more he tried and failed to wake up, the more stressed he became.

His condition started to worsen terribly from the stress, despite his energy being at a stable level. He was almost at a panic. Zero would no doubt notice the stress X was under.

Zero went over to the obviously stressed out cyber elf and put his hand on X's head, pushing some of his hair out of his face. "X, calm down." he said hoping that the cyber elf could hear him. If not X would just end up just like he was a few hours ago. At least that's what he assumed would happen. "I'm all right." he partially lied in hopes of calming the brunette. He would be fine, as long as he always had energy.

CANISTER AT 13%.

Zero would've sighed but he didn't want X to become even more restless. He would have to deal with changing it soon. It seemed flooding his systems with energy was the only option he really had. He would just have to work quickly if it did actually work.

X almost immediately relaxed when he felt a hand on his head. The voice was very faint to him, like an echo at the end of a long tunnel, but he could hear Zero's voice. He was okay?

But...why was there so much energy radiating from him...?

X's condition returned to how it was before he'd begun to panic; not his normal appearance, but not nearly as bad as when he'd fallen comatose. Zero's presence near him comforted and calmed him.

After a few moments, he started feeling a bit better. Seconds later, his eyes opened slightly.

When Zero noticed X was starting to wake he immediately moved away. He didn't want the brunette to see how bad he really was. At least not when he just woke up. He went over to the spare energy canister and picked it up. He forced the remaining energy into his systems before quickly replacing the canister. He could feel his systems working as if they didn't know what to do. Since he was still awake he took it as a good sign.

PROCESSING SYSTEM FUNCTIONS... NORMAL.

The confirmation message reinforced his belief that he was fine. He sighed in relief. Now he had to deal with X. He knew the moment the cyber elf saw how he was that the brunette would flip. As long as X didn't fall back into a coma that was fine with him.

X's eyes took a moment to adjust, as at the moment all he could see was blobs of color. When he saw a smudge of red, black, white, and gold, however, he sighed with relief. Zero was alright. That was a good sign. Was he worrying for nothing?

X tried to push himself upright, but failed rather miserably. His body wasn't responding to the signals he was sending it, and his voice was out of commission at the moment.

Zero glanced over his shoulder at X. The brunette seemed to be awake but unable to really do anything. "Are you alright?" he asked making sure he didn't turn. He didn't need X to see the damage. Not until he was okay. His system seemed to be trying to fix the leak. The wasted amount of energy was becoming less, but still there.

It took a second for it to register in X's mind that Zero had asked if he was okay. He was about to nod, but paused. Was he okay? He could barely move and he couldn't speak. He was practically paralyzed, although he could feel everything just fine.

He decided to nod. He was awake; that was good, right?

Zero wanted to go back over to X, but the hole in his chest was starting to hurt more. He let out a groan as his circuits sparked again, only this time it felt like someone had shot him with a buster only a foot away. He had a feeling he looked like a zombie. A reploid zombie. It definitely wasn't good.

When X saw Zero's face contort slightly with pain and heard the blonde groan, he knew something was wrong. Concerned, the elf carefully pushed himself upright, his arms shaking with fatigue. His breathing quickened slightly, as if the motion exhausted him, then directed his attention to Zero. "A...are you okay...?" he asked, his voice somewhat raspy.

"I..I'm fine." Zero lied using one of his hands to prop himself against the wall. By this point X could probably see the pieces of his chest and core on the floor where he had been sitting earlier. "You should rest some more." He said not wanting X to flip while he still seemed weak.

"I don't...need it..." X's voice was strained, but he somehow managed to keep it from breaking. He slid out of bed, staggering and almost falling flat on his face when he stood, and limped over to Zero, his feet dragging slightly. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw black armor, gears and circuitry, and scraps of red cloth. What the...?

When X was standing beside Zero, he was afforded a clear view of the gaping hole in his chest.

There was a thud as the brunette fainted from the sight.

Zero swore and caught X before the cyber elf hit the ground. He managed to carry X back over to the bed and lay him down gently. He planned to go find something to at least cover up the wound, but it seemed his systems didn't like that idea too much.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION LOWERED. SYSTEMS SET TO STANDBY.

He had almost made it to the door before the message popped up. It seemed his protocols wanted to save energy now. He slummed against the wall as his systems forced him into sleep mode.

X woke up shortly after Zero was forced into sleep mode. Now fully aware of his surroundings--the shock from seeing the gaping wound in Zero's chest snapping him awake--he was able to function more effectively. He walked over to the unresponsive blonde and knelt next to him, placing his hand to the hole in his chest. An aura colored with the same rainbow hue as his halo surrounded his hand as he carefully began to repair the damage done.

The charring around the wound told him what happened: Zero's core malfunctioned and blew up. Healing that much wasn't a problem, but constructing a new core took a few minutes.

By the time Zero would wake up, he would find that his core was restored, his wound healed, his energy stable, and X lying unconscious next to him from using so much energy.

Zero had managed to find ways around his protocols, and was a little glad he had when he saw X repairing the damage. Luckily the brunette hadn't started on making another core for him. He ended up pushing X away, not having a proper thought process after just forcing himself awake. "Don't waste you energy." he ordered in a somewhat low tone. He could fix everything without draining the cyber elf's energy. He'd just need help putting it all into place.

X blatantly ignored Zero's orders and resumed healing the blonde. He didn't have much of a choice in the brunette's actions; the energy canister he'd been using disconnected when he fell, and a quick examination revealed that Zero barely had any energy left. It was a simple matter to pin down Zero's wrists.

"I'm not letting you die from your stubbornness..." X muttered. The new core was nearly done; if Zero tried to interrupt him again, not only would X be unable to continue constructing the core, but it would be so unstable that it would kill Zero in a matter of nanoseconds.

Zero looked rather angry. He could fix himself. He didn't need X to repair him and waste his energy. But he didn't have a choice in the matter. He honestly wanted to kick X away, but since he'd already started to construct a new core he couldn't. He knew he couldn't interrupt the process now, otherwise he'd really die. "You should've just reconnected the canister." he stated half watching X work. He wasn't really focused on anything.

"That wouldn't have done anything..." X nearly whispered. His voice was weak from exhaustion, and it was clear he was pushing himself, but he refused to let Zero die. "It would only last a short while...this is more permanent..."

After a few more moments Zero's core was fully restored and his energy was replenished to about 67%. X smiled faintly before collapsing onto his side, having used up almost all his own energy. Zero could be angry with him all he want. X didn't care. He was just glad that he could save Zero's life.

Zero shook his head and pulled X up so that the brunette was sitting next to him with his head on his shoulder. "Yours just as stubborn as me sometimes." He told the exhausted cyber elf while wrapping his arm around X's waist to keep him upright.

Zero couldn't exactly move at the moment. At least not a whole lot. His systems were resetting themselves to get his new core in place and working correctly.

X was drifting back and forth between being fully awake and being unconscious, but his overall appearance seemed stable. He was quiet, not paying attention to how Zero had set him. However, there was a faint smile on his face. He was happy. He'd been able to do something to help Zero, after two centuries of Zero helping him.

Something was eating at the elf however. He'd query about it when Zero was fully charged and his systems were reset.

Zero used the remaining energy in the canister to fully charge his core. It gave him a little bit of reserve energy too. He glanced over at X noticing the slight smile on his face. He wondered what caused it. After a few moments all of his systems were back online. He stretched letting X know that he was fine now.

X stirred slightly when Zero moved. The tired brunette looked up at his friend. His expression seemed a bit blank from grogginess, but it soon changed to a cheerful, somewhat sleepy smile. "Better now...?" he asked, slurring just a tiny bit. It was kind of a dumb question; if he wasn't better, he would probably be dead.

"Yeah. Thank you." Zero said a slight smile forming on his face as he pushed the brunettes hair out of his face. X seemed to be okay now, just exhausted from exerting so much energy. He was glad nothing else happened to X. Things had been stressful enough. He rested his head back against the wall, tilting it up slightly and closing his eyes. He wasn't tired anymore, he just wanted to relax.

X smiled a little more when Zero brushed his hair out of his face and scooted a bit closer to Zero. He was a little hesitant to sit too close, however, so he wouldn't make the blonde uncomfortable again. Still, he was truly thankful that nothing else happened to either of them.

He wanted to sleep for a few days.

Zero remembered what he had said earlier and immediately rubbed his face. He was definitely glad that X hadn't heard him. If the cyber elf had, he hadn't said anything which was enough confirmation for him. He ended up wrapping his arm around X's waist causing the brunette to sit as close to Zero as he had before in the cavern.
