| X just continued working and shook his head. "I'll handle it just like I always do," he stated simply. "I don't belong in the field. I belong at a desk, filling out papers like the obedient little C-Class I am."
That was probably all Zero needed to hear to understand why the blue Reploid was so upset.

| X froze up slightly at Zero's sudden action, then quickly looked back down toward the desk itself, folding his hands in his lap. The pen he was using still stuck out between his thumb and index finger on his right hand. "Y...yes sir..." he half-mumbled in that meek, shy tone of his.

| Zero was starting to feel rather harsh towards the blue reploid, but it was just because he was upset himself. He picked up all the papers he knocked off and carried them towards the door to leave. "Don't make me think I was wrong about you." He stated before shutting the door behind him. He dumped the paperwork off with a mail reploid before walking off towards the training room.

| X didn't bother even looking up at Zero when the blonde stormed off, closing his eyes. "......you were wrong....." he mumbled to himself.
The blue Reploid didn't even leave the desk. It was nighttime; he should have been in his recovery pod resting, but he didn't feel like even moving.

| Zero trained all night, not taking a break at all. What he'd told X was true. Training when you're angry gives you nothing but damage. The blond had to limp out of the training room while using the wall as a brace. However, it seemed no one was feeling merciful towards him as the Maverick alarm went off.

| X barely even reacted to the Maverick alarm. Let some other Hunter take care of it. He didn't belong in the field. He would just drag everyone down.

| Zero forced himself to stand and walk normally even though it hurt more than anything. It even hurt to breathe. He went to the command room for a briefing. After getting as much details as possible he was sent out. He didn't return for a few hours, which was strange considering the enemy was a lower level one.
One of the medic reploids went into X's room to check on the blue reploid. He hadn't responded to the alarm so she had become worried. Upon taking in his state she rushed over to him and guided him over to the recharge pod so that he could get some energy in him.

| X had gone into standby mode when his energy dropped too low, which was right before the medic showed up. Once he was connected to the pod, his energy levels quickly recharged.
Another medic came in to report something to the one who checked on X--the one who had a bit of a rivalry with Zero. "Zero hasn't returned yet," she stated simply. "His condition was already poor, and he shouldn't even be in the field."

| X eventually woke up and glanced around in confusion. The view in the sky told him that it was almost daybreak. When did he shut down? And how did he get in the pod?
The medic frantically ran back to X's room. "We have a big problem!" she exclaimed breathlessly. "Zero has been knocked unconscious and the Maverick has defeated all of the others we've sent to back him up! Commander Sigma isn't here either, and Vile is still damaged! X, you have to help him!!"

| X had heard every word that the frantic medics had said and was already running down to the command center, recharging on the go. Not one of the navigators gave him a strange look; they knew he was the only other Hunter available now. Zero was in danger, and X was the only one strong enough to help him.
When X was transported he was utterly shocked to see what the Maverick was--a gargantuan Maverick resembling Eregion, only twice as large and with two heads. They sent Zero to fight THIS?!
A small bit of gold moving near the Maverick's right hand caught X's attention--Zero, who was unresponsive and clutched in its claws!

| Zero looked like death itself. Pieces of his armor could be seen scattered around and large cracks could be seen in his armor even from how far away X was. He was in shutdown mode, his energy drained, and his systems crashing from the stress. The last memory he had was seeing his comrades getting destroyed by the Maverick. He was a failure. He let them down.
The Maverick roared and turned its attention to X. It seemed rather agitated more than it normally should've been. There seemed to be a weak point in it's mouth.

| The sight of seeing Zero so badly damaged was more then enough to cause X to snap. He'd started charging his buster the second he got to the command center so it would be ready when he arrived at the site of the Maverick attack, and now the energy charging in the buster, instead of blue, was bright red. The second the Maverick roared X unloaded an immensely powerful blast from the buster that shot right through the beast's maw and out through the back of its head.

| How was the thing still moving?! Its head was gone, it should have been defeated!
X didn't bother trying to reason with logic and instead fired another shot at the Maverick's arm as it swooped down, severing it and causing it to drop Zero. He dashed over with the weak propulsion systems in his boots and narrowly caught the blonde.

| The Maverick screeched again, but retreated away in the air. It seemed it wanted to live a little longer.
What X caught could almost be called Zero. The blond's armor was cracked and chipped everywhere, one of his legs was missing from the knee down, and his right shoulder was barely attached to him. The wires and support joint were visible in his dislocated shoulder, and his core was visible from a large hole in his torso. He was also missing his left arm from the middle of his forearm down. He was a complete wreck.

| X wasted no time in activating his communicator. "Get me and Zero back to base now!!" he ordered. "Zero's in critical condition!!"
The navigators immediately transferred them into the infirmary as medics swarmed them. Some were shocked that X came back without a scratch, others were speechless at how damaged Zero was. However, one revealed something shocking.
"He's alive," she stated. "And is core is unharmed. After we repair him he'll make a full recovery."

| Zero was in total shutdown mode. Although he would make a full recovery after he was repaired, he would need to be repaired quickly other wise those chances of his survival would go down substantially.
"He won't make it if he isn't repaired soon. The stress of his injuries could cause his core to crack." Another medic added now creating an unknown time limit for repairs.

| The medics immediately crowded around Zero and set to work, obscuring him from X's view. The blue Reploid sighed and sat on a workbench. Those charged shots drew from his core and left him rather drained. A medic walked over to him and gave him an E-tank.

| It took about three hours for the medics to get the damage to a minimal level where it wouldn't stress his core. They had to take a break since everyone was busy working on him. They needed a more productive schedule for repairing him, but at least now he'd be okay if left alone. They had him hooked up so that he was charging.

| Zero straightened up from where he was crouched and looked over at X. He didn't really know why X had followed him but he might as well answer the blue reploid. "They needed a leader and I couldn't be one. There's no reason for them to be destroyed because of my incompetence." He stated rather simply. It was his roundabout way of saying that he felt the same way X had earlier. Once he had gathered everything he needed and took note of who they were and ordered for them to be transferred back. He'd deal with the Maverick later. There was no telling where it was anyway.

"Don't beat yourself up about this," he stated, trying to word it similarly to how Zero did earlier. "I know you feel guilty...but... These things happen. It's the risk of being a Hunter. You'll never know when it'll happen until it's too late. But even then...it's incentive to push forward, get stronger."

| For some reason X took slight offense to that, looking over at a wall. "Not my fault I'm the father of all Reploids..." he muttered under his breath low enough so Zero wouldn't hear. And it was true. All Reploids--with the exception of Zero, it seemed--were modeled after X.
I wish I could avoid violence...but if I did, this world wouldn't be able to live in peace. So I will fight for this world, to protect humans and Reploids alike.

| Zero noticed the change in X's demeanor but didn't hear the blue reploid say anything. Although, X seemed offended by something. He ignored it for the most part and continued with his work. It took the rest of the day, but he'd finished. He slumped against the wall slightly but didn't slide down it. He felt exhausted.

| X quietly walked over to Zero and slung one of the taller Reploid's arms over his shoulders, escorting him to his recharge pod. "You need to rest, Zero," he half-ordered.

| Zero didn't argue at first when X lead him to his room, but he did pull away before X could drag him to the recharge pod. "I need to check my systems first." He stated simply before going into his personal workshop and running a complete and thorough scan on his systems to make sure everything really was in order.

| Zero was rather surprised by the results. Nothing was wrong. Not believing it, he preformed the scan a second, and even third time. Apparently the medics were actually good when they actually tried.

| X stood and walked into the workshop with a small smile. "Of course they're good," he commented. "One of them actually came to check on me while you were training. I wound up going into standby mode and almost shutting down, and she managed to get me back online with no trouble."
